Asmt 9: Acids & Bases / Creating Slide Shows

California Science Content Standards:
  • Chemistry Grades 9 – 12.  Standard Set 5. Acids and Bases.

Next Generation Science Standards:
  • HS-PS1-1.    Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
  • HS-PS1-3.    Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.  

Lesson Introduction:

You will be creating a multimedia presentation that will demonstrate the key concepts about Acids and Bases that you have learned from the previous reading and other resources.


Task:

You will be organized into groups of three.  You will create a multimedia presentation in Google Drive that demonstrates your understanding of Acids and Bases.  The presentation should be in Google Presentation format.  For purposes of collaborating on Google Drive, please do not use Microsoft PowerPoint.  The content of the presentation must satisfy the following goals of the topic:
  • To understand the differences between acids and bases.  
  • To be able to identify different acids and bases.  
  • To understand the difference between strong and weak designations, and how it relates to pH.
  • To understand the action of H+ and OH- in forming solutions.

Lesson Process:
Review previous lesson and relevant textbook chapter on acids and bases.
One group member should create a new Google Presentation and share it with the other members and your instructor with commenting and editing privileges.  This will allow everyone sharing this file to collaborate and make individual edits.
The presentation must contain 5 links, 5 relevant photos or clip art, and 1 embedded video.  Please cite all sources.  (Clip art does not have to be cited.)

Class Overview


This first semester AP Chemistry hybrid course covers California State Standards 1 through 6.  Topics will include:
  1. Atomic and Molecular Structure
  2. Chemical Bonds
  3. Conservation of Matter and Stoichiometry
  4. Gases and their Properties
  5. Acids and Bases
  6. Solutions
You are in this class because you are in the college-bound program for future Science majors.  This class will also prepare you to take the AP test, the passing of which some colleges and universities will accept for college credit.

For the online portion of this course, you are expected to participate in the online discussions, complete assignments on time, and collaborate through social media or chat rooms on a group project.

Instructor Profile




Hello students.  Welcome to the online portion of your AP Chemistry class!  To start off, I think it's important to tell you a little about myself.

I was raised in Los Angeles and currently live in West Hollywood. I acquired my bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, and then worked 10 years as a manufacturing engineer.  After some soul searching, I decided engineering was not for me.  I always loved mentoring and tutoring, so I plan to use my science background to teach secondary school Physics and Chemistry.

I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Education program at National University, and will graduate at the end of this year.  Today's classrooms are using more technology and students are more connected through the internet.  My goal here is to have every member of this class learn Chemistry using 21st century tools and apply knowledge for the 21st century environment.
